My NYFW Pick : Proenza Schouler

In Textiles + Textures by Cinnamon McCullum

Having a three day holiday weekend, I was determined to find the time – which is virtually impossible these days – to sit and watch the NYFW Fall/Winter RTW shows. There I was at 2am this morning, having a gander and propping my eyelids open with toothpicks. I watched everything and after a while it all got sort of muddled BUT, it was still easy to select my favorite because I went to bed thinking about Proenza Schouler and woke up doing the same.

From the first model walking to the last, the show was pretty genius and on point. It screamed New York City. Lovely tailored jackets with volume similar to what we saw in the recent Paris shows but softer and more wearable with rounded full sleeves and nipped waists. Energetic smartly layered colors. Rowdy but perfectly mixed patterns. Apparently there was a great deal of experimentation with the fabrics they used. You get this neoprene feel from pictures and videos, but they used wool jacquard, matte leathers and clever flocking, stitching and quilting techniques to get the structure. Love.

What impresses me the most is that I have never really cared for their work prior to this. And I think it says something when a designer steps out of their usual realm and creates something that talks to a different type of person. It is like bringing someone new into their creative conversation. I am happy to participate.
